PAX began a quest in 2025 to re-establish themselves as the global leader in the portable herb vaporizer space. PAX went from a prolonged lull over the last couple years to a whirlwind of new releases in 2025 and now going into 2026 with the release of the PAX 4 Vaporizer. We did a piece prospecting on when we would see a PAX 4 back in 2019 ( 7 years ago) correctly guessing it would not be anytime soon.
The PAX 4 is a tad larger than what we are accustomed to with PAX Portable vaporizers being about the same size as the PAX Flow. The PAX Four feels like an upgrade in both appearance and touch. Lighter alloy body while maintaining that flagship durability.

With the release of the PAX 4, PAX has updated its signature product line to include the PAX Mini v2 (entry-level), the PAX 4 (mid-tier), and the PAX Flow (high-end). In this PAX 4 review, we will not be comparing it to the Mini or the Flow. To truly gauge where the PAX 4 stands, it needs to be measured against the device that defined PAX at its peak—the PAX 3. With the PAX 3 now discontinued, the PAX Plus is the closest current benchmark, carrying the same DNA that made the PAX 3 the most popular portable dry herb vaporizer on the market.
Price

The PAX 4 comes in at $249. This was the same price which was considered the sweet spot back in the day, where mid-tier to high-end portables were priced. What is working against the PAX 4 ten years later is the flood of competitive portable vaporizers now available at much lower prices, along with a major shift toward concentrated cannabis (dabs).
Still, $250 feels about right for a high-end electronic device in 2026—and is in line with what you’ll pay for a comparable brand that carries the reputation and history of PAX.
If you use the link above you can get a discount, free grinder and a 60 day trial period with the PAX 4.
Packaging
The PAX 4 Packaging takes on the new packaging the PAX Mini v2 and PAX Flow use. It has a nice shelf appeal but is not ideal for constantly taking it out and putting it away. The parts & accessories which come with the packaging are also stored in an odd manner but it does the trick of getting you your device and we recommend you keep it if you ever want to resell or trade in your PAX 4, but this is again a device where you will likely want to get an aftermarket case for storing at home. I don’t get why they didn’t stick with the cheap packaging of the Mini v1 and PAX Plus as this new approach only carries shelf value as a store display but is some of the worst practicality for packaging I have ever seen. I mean the spare screens are like taped in to the side and they all come out when trying to access them.

Build & Design

Comparing the PAX 4 to what we were used to with the PAX 2 through PAX Plus, it is a totally different vape. You will not mistake this one for any of the other legacy PAX models. If you were to hold the PAX Plus and PAX 4 in the hand and ask someone which they thought was the 2026 model, the PAX 4 would be what most would say. It does look and feel like an upgrade besides being much larger than the PAX Plus.
The PAX 4 parts are not backwards compatible with the PAX Mini, Plus, Mini v2 or the PAX 2 or PAX 3. It was nice in the past being able to interchange these around but you cannot use your old PAX parts & accessories on the PAX 4.The Flow however does have some compatibility with the PAX 4 silicone glove and water pipe adapter.
Another notable change on the PAX 4 is it is not compatible with the concentrate insert. Currently that can only be used with the PAX Mini v2 and Plus. I will say you are not missing much with that as the concentrate adapter is pretty bad and was more a marketing gimmick.
The PAX 4 stays true to the winning formula established by its predecessors. Its layout is straightforward—the herb oven sits at one end, while the mouthpiece rests at the other, making it intuitive to use. Built from a durable metal alloy, the PAX 4 is designed to go wherever you go besides in the water 😉 . All electronics and the battery are neatly enclosed within the alloy body, keeping everything secure and protected during everyday carry. Inside, the heating chamber is crafted from stainless steel, while the mouthpiece is made from heat-resistant, rubberized silicone for a comfortable draw every time.
The PAX 4 does have a new magnetic oven lid which functions in a way like the half pack oven lid given its small protrusion. The magnetic connection does not feel as strong as on the PAX Plus and if I overpacked the herb chamber I would often be fumbling around with the lid falling out.
The PAX 4 has a new design with a filtered herb chamber. This makes loading the herb chamber a bit easier but it is not a game changer. The easiest way to load in my opinion remains to scoop it directly into the device with the ground herb in the palm of your hand.
Another positive of the PAX 4 design and build is no need for the proprietary PAX charging dock. The USB-C input in the top side of the device lets you charge with just a commonly available cable.
usability

The intuition of the PAX 4 (and all other PAX Vaporizers) is one of its strongest selling points. You can pretty much figure it out – out of the box (but do always read the instructions). You grind your herb, put it in the oven and turn the device on by pressing the circle imprint on the mouthpiece. Right away it will begin to heat up.
You change the temperature on the PAX 4 by pressing the same button used to power it on with one fast click to cycle through the temperature settings displayed by the 4 LED light petals.
One of the biggest confusions we get here is the replacing the mouthpiece with the raised mouthpiece or customers thinking they didnt get the flat mouthpiece / trying to put the raised mouthpiece on over the flat mouthpiece. The flat mouthpiece comes on the device. It is ready to go from here. For even greater airflow you can change it out for the raised mouthpiece.
Settings & Function
The PAX 4 has four temperature settings and they do not assign succinct temperatures to go with each setting. That is because the 4 temperature settings offer intelligent heat modes where the temperature will increase as you draw or as the session goes and cool when not inhaling etc. These feedback loops work to preserve your herb and create optimal vapor.
The PAX 4 also adds hybrid heating (conduction and convection) whereas the previous lineup models were strictly conduction. This hybrid heating provides double the power for vapor output accentuating the settings above
Sessions
The optimal results come with a ~0.25 gram pack. That said, thanks to the hybrid heating and increased airflow, you can comfortably pack up to 0.3–0.35 grams and still get consistent, quality vapor. On the PAX Plus, packing it that tight would feel like sucking ice cream through a straw.
Heat-up time is a downside, coming in at around 1 minute and 15 seconds. This detracts from its otherwise strong portable profile. With a device this portable, you want quick, on-demand hits—not to sit around waiting for it to be ready.
Depending on your temperature setting and draw length, you can expect around 10–12 solid hits before the vapor starts to get too harsh.
With the improved hybrid heating, your herb is extracted more quickly. You’re getting more vapor in a shorter period of time compared to previous PAX models, which means your material is spent faster.
The PAX 4 includes an auto shutoff feature to help preserve battery life. After 30 seconds of inactivity, it enters standby mode, and then fully shuts down after about a minute. This won’t trigger if you’re actively holding or moving the device.
It also doesn’t get as hot in the hand as the Flow. The Flow, honestly, can feel like you’re in a hot potato contest. The PAX 4 can still get warm after multiple sessions at higher temperatures, so if that’s how you plan to use it, a silicone glove is a smart pickup.
Even with the hybrid heating system, a mid-session (or between sessions) stir and repack can still improve performance slightly and help ensure more even extraction.
Vapor Quality
The PAX 4 offers some okay vapor quality. I personally enjoy the vapor from the PAX Plus alot more. The initial hits felt rather hot to what I am used to with PAX even on the lower heat settings.
The vapor is more full bodied and if you draw slow and controlled you can avoid the heat and get some of the biggest clouds I have seen come out of a PAX Vaporizer. This is a perfect vaporizer to use the water pipe adapter for even bigger smoother clouds.
The PAX 4 didn’t provide the best vapor either on the quick little sips. It seemed to give the best vapor doing what PAX designed it for, larger draws and more robust clouds. This is the perfect balance between the PAX Mini v2 and the PAX Flow , so PAX’s design and engineering team deservers props for that.
If you want more robust vapor and you have the lung capacity to handle the texture and volume then the PAX 4 can actually get you medicated much quicker than the rest of them. I even feel with the Flow the crazy unrestricted airflow made it harder to get the clouds I was getting from the PAX 4.
Battery Life & Charging

The PAX 4 features an internal 2800mAh lithium-ion battery and charges via USB-C. One major advantage of USB-C charging is how easy it is to find a compatible cable when you’re out and about. In the past, while I praised PAX devices for their portability, that advantage quickly disappeared if you were at a friend’s place with a dead battery and no proprietary charger—you were stuck carrying around a useless device.
While it’s great that the PAX 4 uses widely available charging cables found in most households, the battery life is, frankly, disappointing. It’s hard not to factor this heavily into the overall recommendation. In my experience, I was getting about four sessions before needing to recharge, and the charging times are also underwhelming. Even though faster charging cables exist, that somewhat defeats the purpose of switching to USB-C in the first place. After roughly two hours of charging, you’re only getting about 45 minutes of use.
You can check the battery level on the PAX 4 by shaking the device during a session. This is one area where the app support from the PAX 3 would have been nice to see again. On the PAX 4, you’re limited to interpreting the LED petals, which indicate approximate levels of 25%, 50%, 75%, or 100%. The issue is that this isn’t very precise—you could be at 7% battery and it will still display as 25%. This is especially frustrating given that the PAX 4 doesn’t deliver as many sessions per charge as the now-discontinued PAX Plus or PAX Mini.
Portability
Even with the increase in size from past versions the PAX 4 is super easy to carry around and you will not need to worry about breaking any of the components. The PAX 4 is something you can take in and out of the pocket without issue. That is the biggest selling points of PAX and you can’t go wrong with any PAX device you choose in regards to portability.

Cleaning
Cleaning the PAX 4 is another great facet of the device. It is as intuitive to clean as it is to use and again that extends to the other PAX devices. You wipe the oven out, punch the airpath with the wire brush and wipe or soak the screens in Iso-propyl.
Warranty & Trial PEriod
The PAX 4 comes with a 3 year warranty. However you must register your device within 30 days of purchase or you just get a 2 year warranty. This is not as good as the 10 year warranty they used to offer and even have on the remaning inventory of the PAX Plus.
If you are sitting on the fence about buying the PAX 4, To the Cloud Vapor Store offers a 60 day trial period in which you can return your used PAX 4 device for up to 60 days after receipt for a partial refund or credit towards another vaporizer.
All in all the PAX 4 does fit a need for someone wanting a big hitting portable herb vaporizer, however I just think there are so many better options and I would again strongly recommend buying the PAX Plus for $100 cheaper while they are still available. One of the biggest selling points of the PAX 4 was that I could get 3-4 large hits and be good and then go back and session with the same material 2 more times until it was spent.
Even the PAX Mini v2 is a better value if you are not chasing huge clouds and just need something for a simple night cap. The current line up offered by PAX does give you the 3 options though for entry level, mid tier and high end. So it has it’s spot.
